Strategies and Methods for getting more out of reading a newspaper.
(written by Ben McCaffery)
Before
Reading:
Check
title. Make a guess about the content. What do I already know about this topic,
maybe know and definitely don't know. Make a note of what you definitely don't
know about the topic. What are your uninformed opinions about this topic?
During
Reading :
Note
the words that you don't know. Mark them and write them down. Pay attention to
any part of the article that is difficult to read or understand.
Note
key ideas, use the summary table. (see over)
Keep
in mind: the title of article, its setting, that you may want to explain to
somebody else what the article is about.
After
Reading :
Check
Meaning. Meaning first, language second. Is the meaning clear for you?
What are the basic facts presented (Who – the focus group/s mentioned. What –
the topic and the reason for its examination. Where – where in the world does
this story take place? When – does the article have historical, contemporary or
future concern? Why – why is there focus on this issue?) What can you take from
the knowledge of this information? How does it relate to you?
Check
vocabulary. How important is the word to your vocabulary? Practice the more
important words by using them in sentences, written and spoken. Consider real
situations when you could use the vocabulary.
Be
aware of your impressions. When reading, did you have any emotional response to
the article? What were the thoughts that occurred to you while reading?
Bring
some perspective to the article. Who wrote this, and for what reason? What is
the social context of this article? Try to see if both sides of an issue are
given equal weight in the article. How does this article relate to you? To Taiwan ? To
humanity in general? To the global condition?
Look
for any realizations that may come to you. What do you know now, that you
previously didn't? Are there any observations that occurred to you while
studying the article? For example, observations about how this article is like,
or unlike, another you've read, or about the current direction of global
conscience, or about how similar or different you are from other people around
the world.
Finally,
what is the next step in your life after having read the article. Does the
newer knowledge you've acquired influence you in any way at all? Did any
solutions to problems presented occur to you that you could share with others?
What would be the best response to the article you've read?
